Deadline Extended Until March 1 for SWVA Lift

Emory & Henry College, exit 26 off I-81 in Emory, Va., has extended the deadline for its SWVA Lift initiative until March 1. The program helps make a top liberal arts education affordable for need-based students across Southwest Virginia at Emory & Henry.

SWVA Lift targets lower-income students from Lee, Wise, Dickenson, Buchanan, Tazewell, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Washington, Grayson, Carroll, Wythe and Bland counties, and cities of Norton, Galax and Bristol, Va.

To be eligible for the program, students must be accepted into the college and be Pell Grant eligible. SWVA Lift allows qualified students to attend with minimal out-of-pocket costs – and significantly lower average loan debt upon graduation.

A Pell Grant is a subsidy the U.S. federal government provides for students who need it to pay for college. These federally distributed grants are limited to students with financial need, who have not earned their first bachelor’s degree, and are enrolled in certain post-baccalaureate programs, through participating institutions.

“As a native of southwest Virginia, I care deeply about the long-term economic health of the region,” said Myra Sims, interim vice president for enrollment management. “This is an affordable way for students to live at home and save on a four year degree.”

To be eligible for SWVA Lift, prospective students need to complete an E&H application by March 1. They must also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and use FAFSA code #003709. Prospective students must fill out the FAFSA form in order to be eligible for federal student aid including the Pell Grant.

While most of the tuition costs will be covered by the initiative, students choosing to live on campus, room and board charges are not covered under the SWVA Lift Initiative program. Students are encouraged to commute to save more than $40,000 in four years.
