Student Spotlights African-American Leaders Across Campus

Emory & Henry College student Achille Wangam has put together a project for Black History Month that highlights students, staff and faculty leaders across the campus.

Wangam has spent the spring semester collecting testimonials of African-American students, which include the individual’s activities and interests at the college and future aspirations. The students are asked “who has influenced their lives and what Black History Month means to them?” These daily stories are then shared on the Facebook page for the Inclusion & Dialogue Center as part of the #BlackExcellence project.

“Some of the students I was referred to were people I didn’t even know,” said Wangam. “Even when we learn little things such as a student’s favorite music or food, it allows us to know them even better. This is also a good way for us to get to know each other in a small community.”

Wangam has said the project has started a dialogue across campus. He says he’s happy to provide this opportunity to spotlight student achievement, and he hopes it inspires the next student leaders.

“It is important to show incoming students that this a place where they can belong and succeed.”

Wangam says he is still learning about the importance of Black History Month. Almost a decade ago, he moved to the United States from Cameroon to Richmond, Va. with his father.

“To me, Black History Month showcases how the black population has persevered through adversity and left their stamp on the world,” said Wangam.

Wangam is a double major in European studies and French with a Spanish minor. He plans to attend graduate school and study languages after graduating in May.

Currently, he is a member of the cheer and dance teams, president of the French honors society, vice-president of the Spanish honors society, and serves as a global ambassador for International Study Abroad.
