College to Host Virginia Forum Historical Conference

Emory & Henry College will host historians, teachers, writers, archivists, museum curators, historic site interpreters, librarians, and others engaged in the study and interpretation of Virginia history on March 15-17 at the annual conference sponsored by the Virginia Forum.

Founded in 2006, the Forum features presentations and discussions on all aspects of Virginia life, society, history and culture. In honor of the conference’s location in Southwest Virginia, organizers plan to explore the regional differences long seen in the state, as well as the roots of each region’s social and cultural distinctiveness. A special focus will be placed on the relationship between local history and regional identity all across the state.

Sessions and workshops will draw on the full range of Virginia-focused research, including work in the fields of economics, politics, geography, law, literature, history, politics, environmental studies, archaeology and anthropology, museum and library studies, historic preservation, among others.

Because of the richness, complexity, variety and significance of Virginia history, conference organizers say that those who study Virginia in both past and present can benefit from the conference. The Virginia Forum is meant to bring together historical professionals from all fields and institutional affiliations and encouraging participants to develop the networks of services characteristic of professional organizations.

All Forum events will take place on the main Emory & Henry campus, which is listed on the National Historic Registry. The Friday evening reception will include dinner, with a keynote speech by Tal Stanley, director of the Appalachian Center for Civic Life at Emory & Henry College. Stanley recently completed an Appalachian Colleges Association post-doctoral fellowship devoted to laying the foundation for a book tentatively titled American Road: Place, Racism, Resistance, and Civic Memory. He focuses on community studies, drawing particularly on the importance of place and collective memory, in this case, two small communities in nearby Pulaski County.
