WEHC Series Honored by the Virginia Association of Broadcasters

The award was presented to Simmons during the 80th Annual Virginia Association of Broadcasters Convention in Virginia Beach, in a category dedicated to the best documentary or public affairs program in radio.

Entitled “Love Shouldn’t Hurt,” the documentary series for which Simmons was honored features interviews with a survivor, a batterer, a law enforcement official and a representative of the court system. The series aired in October of 2016 during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Simmons, a member of the Board of Directors of Abuse Alternatives, is dedicated to helping prevent domestic abuse, in part through raising awareness about the problem and how it persists.

“Having people tell their stories about domestic abuse can be very helpful, so I was determined that this series would portray the realities of domestic violence and what it means to our society,” said Alana.

Awards are based on projects first aired between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of 2016. The awards were judged by the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters.

Through this series, Alana enabled her subjects to tell poignant, real stories about the impacts of domestic violence on individuals and families.
This engaging work helped generate important conversations about domestic violence in our community.
