Bowyer Returns to E&H to Serve as New Dean of Students

Emory & Henry College has named Ryan Bowyer (’10) its new dean of students.

Bowyer returns to Emory & Henry after spending four years serving as a community coordinator and conduct officer at Coastal Carolina University. He has previous experience working in campus life and housing at Methodist University and Radford University.

At Emory & Henry, Bowyer will be responsible for oversight in the areas of Greek life, student conduct, campus recreation and residence life. He will also work closely with the outdoor and campus care programs.

“I want to be the kind of dean that students know they can come to if they are having an issue, they know that the dean of students will support and advocate for them through that crisis,” said Bowyer. “At the same time, I want them to know that I will be holding the student body accountable to our community standards.”

Bowyer says it was a surreal experience when he returned to the E&H campus in March. He says it is humbling to come back to a place that has meant so much to him.

“I understand this isn’t necessarily the same Emory & Henry College that I knew as a student,” said Bowyer. “You have to be humble and accept the learning curve for understanding how the college you knew has changed over time.”

Initially, Bowyer says he plans to dive into life at Emory & Henry by taking in all that it has to offer. From theatre plays to dining in the cafeteria or simply walking the college grounds, he hopes to start that process of understanding the student and institutional needs as quickly as he can.

“This is what I’ve always looked for in a profession, and to do it in a place where I can make a true impact and make positive change is super exciting.”
