Political Science Department Ranked Top 10 in the Nation

Emory & Henry College’s department of politics, law and international relations has been ranked as one of the best in the nation according to the Schools.com Ranking of Political Science.

The website ranked colleges using a unique methodology and data provided by the National Center for Education Statistics. Schools.com uses trusted sources — like the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics and reports from accredited schools.

In commenting on what helps the E&H experience standout, the website identified the options students have for two different bachelor’s degrees in political science. Students can pursue a B.A. in political science or in law and politics.

“Both programs include the option to complete a rigorous undergraduate honors thesis program for seniors, as well as opportunity to argue cases in front of real federal and state judges in the department’s moot court competition,” the website commented in the ranking.

The College also scored high for the admissions rate and low student to teacher ratio.

“Students in the department gain a wider understanding of the world by focusing on both the theoretical and practical problems of politics through a combination of core courses and advanced specialized concentrations,” said Anne Shumaker, department chair. “Students are encouraged to link theory and practice and to compare different political systems and cultures.” 

The department has three full-time faculty members with a wide range of teaching and research interests and is home of the college’s nationally known pre-law program.

Classes cover a range of topics and themes at the local, regional, national, and international level. Students explore such issues as the exercise of power in its myriad forms and consequences, analyze the role of religion in global governance, explore the impact of the war on terrorism on national and international politics, examine the causes of war and peace, and contemplate the history of such important ideas as liberty, justice, community and morality.

The Political Science Department supplements its regular course offerings with an honors thesis program, study abroad and the annual moot court competition.
