Professor Michael Lane Releases Groundbreaking Work

Professor of Chemistry, Michael Lane, has released a collaborative work on the strength of composite materials.

Emory & Henry College chemistry professor Michael Lane has released another paper as a co-author, adding to his well-established career as an accomplished author and researcher in the field of chemistry. Titled Frequency-tunable Toughening in a Polymer-metal-ceramic Stack Using an Interfacial Molecular Nanolayer, Lane and fellow authors made a discovery that could pave the way for new materials and applications. The team found that oscillating loads at certain frequencies can lead to several-fold increases in the strength of composites with an interface that is modified by a molecular layer of “nanoglue.”

“Our findings of beneficiary couplings between the nanoglue effect and the properties of a constituent in a composite during cyclic loading opens a new paradigm in reliability engineering,” said Lane. “Manipulating the coupling can actually make composites more robust under just the loading conditions we have traditionally tried to avoid, and hence, can vastly expand the scope and improve the performance of composites in applications.”

This groundbreaking work is the product of a collaboration between researchers from multiple disciplines who are based in New York, Virginia, and Grenoble, France. Lane himself holds 40 patents, has published over 50 papers, and has received several recognitions for excellence in teaching, with many of his students going on to join prestigious graduate programs across the country.

Dr. Michael Lane, the Billie Sue Hurst Professor of Chemistry, has previously been honored with the Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award by the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia in 2014.
