Students Called to Order with Moot Court

This past Fall, students a part of the Moot Court course presented oral arguments in front of a panel of judges in a culmination of a semester-long course taught by Teresa Williams

This past Fall semester, Teresa Williams, with a background in law and education, looked at the political science program and found it lacking a crucial element for students looking to go into law as a profession. “There wasn’t anything to prepare the students for an actual courtroom experience,” Williams said about starting the course. “I knew there had to be interest among the students to have such an experience, so after I wrote an advertisement explaining what the course was about, interest and sign-ups for Moot Court spiked.”

From the advertisement:

“Just imagine being introduced to the world of legal advocacy by having the opportunity to play the role of a lawyer by writing a legal brief and arguing your side before a judge panel. This is your chance, under the guidance of an attorney instructor who is passionate and eager to introduce you to the world of legal advocacy.”

The course had the students study legal precedence and how to apply them to appeals. The students had to learn how to read cases and find the right ones for their arguments. “The students learned legal reasoning and how to argue them through the Socratic Method. They worked on formality and constitutional interpretation. When the day of the moot court arrived, I knew they’d be ready,” Williams bragged on her students. “They were dressed professionally and they knew their facts. They were wonderful and sharp kids and the judges told me they were more impressive and prepared than most lawyers they’ve seen.”

The course was offered to Junior and Senior students and included Jared Tuck, Alexis Staubus, Alexandra Vance, Nathan Krauss, Orlando Martinez, Michael Bosset, and Jane Mikusa. “I hope to do this course again so that students can feel prepared for law school and the courtroom after that. I know these students, with all the hard work they put in, will be ready for whatever lies ahead of them.”
