Spires: Coming to You Live on WEHC!

Ty Spires, an E&H junior, is fulfilling his internship requirement for Mass Communications at WEHC 90.7FM. Ty is learning all the ins and outs of what it takes to run a radio station, while bringing his own personal video recording experience.

Ty Spires, originally from Lancaster, Ohio, but now living in Saltville, Va., has begun his summer internship with WEHC 90.7FM. While originally planning to intern at WCYB in Bristol, Tenn., a conflict arose and he was unable to spend his summer at the local TV station. “After the WCYB internship fell through, I was scrambling to find something to do,” Spires said. “I reached out to Brent Treash in E&H athletics, who reached out to Richard Graves, general manager of WEHC, who reached out to the Virginia Association of Broadcasting, and got me this internship at WEHC!”

While originally intending for Spires to do more video recording than audio recording, he and Graves have worked out several video projects for him to accomplish. “We have plenty of local organizations that we partner with regularly that are excited to work with Ty and receive services that would normally be very expensive,” Graves said. “So while we have him doing a regular radio internship with all of the responsibilities that that entails, we also have him recording and editing video spots for organizations like Abingdon Music Experience and Barter Theatre.” 

“I think this internship is a great opportunity to develop my skills as a communicator,” Spires remarked. “It will allow me to expand my skill-set in all forms of media, not just the one I am comfortable with.” He began his internship at the beginning of June and will continue until the end of July. Spires is a junior mass communications and business administration double-major whose career goal is to be a director at a television news station.
