New Book by Professors Discusses the Changes to Education Post-9/11

Professors Matthew Shannon and Mark Finney have had their new book published recently. The book seeks to discuss what has changed in education and other fields of study after the events of 9/11.

On this day of remembrance, we celebrate two faculty members’ accomplishments. Professor Mark Finney and Professor Matthew Shannon have recently had their book, 9/11 and the Academy: Responses in the Liberal Arts and the 21st Century World, published. 

Their book covers the pressure placed on higher education after the events of 9/11, offers critiques to the notion that a liberal arts education is less valuable today, and analyzes the media coverage of 9/11, among other topics not directly related to the attacks themselves. 

“The book will affect people on different registers,” said Shannon. “It will appeal to students of different fields. Educators will benefit, but also folks interested in 9/11 can gain valuable knowledge. It’s not just a book on 9/11.”

The book came about after both professors attended a conference here on campus where different educators and students came and spoke about the effects of 9/11 on their field of study. “I continue to be amazed at how scholars bring together different disciplines in their own research and the different ways those fields explain an event like 9/11,” said Shannon.
