Emory & Henry’s Education program, allows future educators to learn and work with highly respected experts in primary and secondary education.

Students who wish to teach in the elementary/middle grades choose from three interdisciplinary majors that combine English and language arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics. Each of the three majors is named for its primary focus, but each also incorporates significant work in the other fields. These majors include: Interdisciplinary English, Interdisciplinary History and Social Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Mathematics.

Students planning to teach in secondary school, grades 6-12, choose from these majors: Biology, Chemistry, Geography, English, History, Mathematics or Physics.

Students planning to teach in the PK-12 level choose from these majors: Art/Visual Arts, Spanish, Physical Education, Music, Instrumental, or Music, Vocal.

Teacher preparation at Emory & Henry adheres to the professional requirements for all teachers as specified by the Virginia Department of Education. Students will have the opportunity to engage in diverse field placements in local school districts’ classrooms through early observations, practicums, and student teaching through the professional semester of the final program year.

The Education Department has partnered with many community stakeholders to ensure the quality of the teacher preparation program. These partners provide valuable perspectives that enrich our pre-service teachers’ experiences on campus and in the field.
