Rebecca Russell Buchanan
Rebecca Buchanan received her B.A. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill while on a full athletic scholarship in track and field.
While at UNC, she was an eight-time All-American and Atlantic Coast Conference Champion and record holder. She was a finalist in the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials and a member of the 1997 U.S. World Championship Team. She was also ranked in the top 10 for the U.S. in the 400 meter hurdles for three years. In 2002, she was selected as a member of the ACC’s 50th Anniversary Women’s Outdoor Track & Field team.
She earned her M.S. in Sport Management from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville while serving as a graduate assistant in the Exercise Science, Sport, and Leisure Studies department. She completed her PhD in Education with a concentration in Sports Studies from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Research
Her research interests include trauma informed approaches in Education, youth sports, wellness, and the link between movement and learning. She has traveled throughout the U.S. and various countries such as Russia, Argentina, Canada, Japan, and Greece for both athletic and academic endeavors.
Professional Experience
She joined the Emory & Henry family in 2003 and served as Assistant Dean of Students for five years. Her passion for sports and physical activity led her to pursue a faculty position within the Health and Human Performance department. She is also a member of the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth SWVA Regional Advisory Board.
