Brent Becnel
Dr. Brent Becnel is a Family Nurse Practitioner who obtained his undergraduate nursing degree from Nicholls State University in 1995. It was in 2012 that Dr. Becnel graduated with his master’s degree with a Family Nurse Practitioner focus from Loyola University, New Orleans. Wishing to continue his education further, he obtained his Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2018 from Loyola University, New Orleans as well. During his DNP journey, Dr. Becnel applied for and was awarded the American Association of Nurse Practitioner’s (AANP) grant which helped to fund his project. He also submitted his project and was approved for publication by the Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (JAANP) prior to his May graduation. Additionally, his university recognized his leadership and achievements by awarding him the Nightingale Award.
Dr. Becnel’s advanced practice career started in primary care at a local hospital-owned physician group. Dr. Becnel was the group’s first nurse practitioner, pioneering the way for other nurse practitioners, the practice currently has grown to over fifty. Dr. Becnel also practiced in an Urgent Care clinic which had two locations, one being in the French Quarter as a sole provider when on duty, and as the supervisor and sole provider of a Convenient Care Clinic at the physician group at which he originally started his advanced practice career. This provided same-day appointments, treated urgent health needs, and provided primary care services to those in need. Currently, Dr. Becnel is a provider at an urgent care group that has partnered with a local hospital system in Charlotte, North Carolina. Dr. Becnel also provides PrEP services to those who engage in high-risk sexual behaviors.
Dr. Becnel has served on Gilead’s HIV Prevention Regional Advisory Board of Directors to give feedback on the aspects that work for the PrEP program and the barriers that continue to be brought down. Currently, Dr. Becnel is a member of the Louisiana Association of Nurse Practitioners, The American Association of Nurse Practitioners, The International Nurses Association, The American Society of Men’s Health, The North Carolina Nurses Association, and Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society.
