Programs & Requirements
Emory & Henry provides Virginia Department of Education and CAEP approved initial teacher licensure programs in elementary/middle grades PK-8 and secondary programs (6-12 and PK-12) in a variety of teaching majors. Each program meets or exceeds the requirements for licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Fast-Track Master of Education, M.Ed. Professional Studies
In addition to undergraduate initial licensure programs, Emory & Henry offers a fast-track master of education, M.Ed. For students who already have a B.A. or B.S. degree in a teachable content area, the fast-track M.Ed. provides the course work needed to be recommended for licensure through the teacher preparation program. Admission Requirements
In order to be admitted into the Graduate Program for teacher preparation, individuals must complete their undergraduate degree, pass all required assessments for their endorsement area, have an overall GPA of at least 3.0, a major GPA of at least 3.0. and have completed a program interview (typically conducted in the candidate’s junior year if an undergraduate student or prior to the program’s summer start date for online, fast-track applicants).
In order to be admitted into the teacher preparation program to complete a master’s degree, a candidate must have passed all assessments required for their endorsement area, have an overall GPA of at least 3.0, a major GPA of at least 3.0 and have completed a program interview.

Elementary/Middle Grades
Students who wish to teach in the elementary/middle grades choose from three interdisciplinary majors that combine English and language arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics. Each of the three majors is named for its primary focus, but each also incorporates significant work in the other fields. These majors include: Interdisciplinary English, Interdisciplinary History and Social Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Mathematics.
Secondary School
Students planning to teach in secondary school, grades 6-12, choose from these majors: Biology, Chemistry, Geography, English, History, Mathematics or Physics.
Students planning to teach in the PK-12 level choose from these majors: Art/Visual Arts, Spanish, Physical Education, Music, Instrumental, or Music, Vocal.
