Emory & Henry Announces New RN to BSN Program
Courses are offered online and hybrid format for the convenience of the working adult. The first class will start Fall 2019.
“Healthcare is in a state of change within our region and the healthcare needs of individuals
and communities are becoming more complex,” said Director Saundra R. Farmer, DNP, MSN,
RN, and Abingdon resident. “Nurses have an important role in influencing the delivery of care
provided for diverse individuals, populations, and communities. As a Baccalaureate trained
nurse, the ability to engage in a collaborative, interprofessional culture enables the nurse to
critically think, enhance decision-making capabilities, and to be an advocate and voice for the
patient.”
The Emory & Henry College RN to BSN program strives to promote a holistic, client-centered
approach to educating and enhancing the nursing profession with nurses who exhibit a passion
for the profession and the desire to impact the health of their patients. The RN to BSN student will be involved in an educational program which will encourage a deeper level of thinking beyond the skills and bedside nursing care they provide on a daily basis. The nursing student will be an active participant in their learning process through collaborative encounters inter-
professionally, intra-professionally, and within the community to provide evidence-based,
patient-centered nursing care.
“Our purpose is to educate and prepare baccalaureate level nurses to be professional leaders in
healthcare in Southwest Virginia and surrounding areas. The nursing curriculum is built with the
underpinnings of liberal arts, sciences, and nursing which focus on the nursing process to
enhance the pedagogical attainment of nursing knowledge, clinical skills, and a devotion to the
nursing profession,” said Farmer.
While the majority of classes will be online, some courses will benefit from the hands-on
experiences offered at the Emory & Henry College School of Health Sciences in Marion, Va. as
well as instruction on the Emory main campus. Students will be able to integrate their learning
among graduate students in the physical and occupational therapy clinical settings.
