Janie Hull
Dr. Hull, Visiting Assistant Professor of Education, has over 30 years of experience promoting research-based reading and literacy skills in classrooms and schools. She serves in the Education and English Departments as an instructor in the Teacher Preparation Program. As a native of Southwest Virginia and a graduate of Emory & Henry College, she began her career as a classroom teacher in Washington County, Virginia and later became a licensed reading specialist. In 2004 she became a literacy coach in Bristol Virginia Public Schools, and worked closely with the Virginia Department of Education to help set up best practice reading programs for students, classrooms, and schools; conducted staff development, and helped plan response to intervention in her school division. She served on Virginia’s SOL Test Item and Review Committee, was president of the Southwest Virginia Reading Council, was a member of the Virginia State Literacy Association’s Executive Board, and was the VSLA Representative to the International Literacy Association. She worked as a national staff developer with CSR(Creating Strategic Readers, Inc.) and in Florida, completed residencies at schools in need of school improvement.

Research
Dissertation: Teachers’ and Principals’ Perspectives of Literacy Coaching in an Elementary School
She participated in a research project in Thailand. Her research team’s article, “Adequately Equipping Our Children: The Need for Child-Centered, Play-based Approaches to Human Trafficking” (Jones, Ellery, Rhodes, Hull) was published in December 2021.
Dr. Hull’s primary interest is researching best practices for instruction and teaching reading at all developmental levels of learning in order to produce lifelong learners.
