Shelby R. Carico
Dr. Shelby Carico currently serves as an eLearning Instructional Designer at Emory & Henry College. Prior to her appointment at Emory & Henry, Shelby served as an instructor at James Madison University, Washington & Lee University, Southern Virginia University, and Ohio University, where she designed and taught courses in music theory, aural skills, music in general culture, high brass performance, and brass techniques/pedagogy.
With a strong passion for innovative, accessible, learner-centered instruction, Shelby strives to create educational experiences for learners of all levels, backgrounds, and ability levels. With several years of professional experience in pedagogy, in-person, hybrid, and online instruction, curriculum development, technology, and the performing arts at colleges and universities of differing types, sizes, and locations, Shelby is able to offer a unique, holistic approach to instructional design that makes equitable, diverse, inclusive learning experiences an achievable reality.
A staunch proponent of equal access to educational materials and resources that aid in diversifying instruction, Shelby is the creator and developer of Trumpet-Rep, an online, searchable database of works for solo trumpet and piano by living American composers, that serves as a free resource for those interested in diversifying their concert programs and applied lesson curriculums. Previously, Shelby partnered with Interaxon Corporation to design and implement a teaching method using bio and neurofeedback in academic settings to aid students suffering from Musical Performance Anxiety. Additionally, she has led professional development seminars, workshops, and masterclasses at a number of universities throughout the Eastern and Midwestern United States, and has presented at several conferences, including the International Trumpet Guild Conference.
Shelby holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Emory & Henry College, a Master of Music degree in Music Performance from Ohio University, a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Performance, Pedagogy, and Literature from James Madison University, and a Professional Certificate in User Experience Design and Human-Computer Interaction from Cornell University. She has also completed a number of professional certificate programs in project management, instructional design, and UX/UI design and research.
Shelby currently resides in Kingsport, Tennessee with her tuxedo cat, Oliver, and enjoys reading, teaching private trumpet lessons, tackling DIY projects, and performing with the E&H Faculty Brass Quintet. Additionally, Shelby is a certified Mindfulness and Meditation Instructor, and enjoys attending and teaching mindfulness and meditation classes and retreats.
