Emory & Henry College offers nationally accredited programs to endorse pre-service teachers for a license in elementary, middle school, art, music, health and physical education, Spanish, biology, chemistry, earth science, English, history and social sciences, mathematics, and physics.
Licensure through the Virginia Department of Education
Teacher preparation at Emory & Henry adheres to the professional requirements for all teachers as specified by the Virginia Department of Education. The Virginia Department of Teacher Licensure requirements can be found here:

Teacher Preparation Assessments Required for Licensure
Emory & Henry College’s teacher preparation program requires assessments that are necessary for licensure in Virginia and accreditation of the program. A list of testing requirements can be found here and then clicking on the link “Professional Teacher’s Assessment Requirements.” Students are required to take and pass all required assessments in their content area prior to the student teaching semester. Emory & Henry College candidates have a 100% pass rate on their licensure assessments.

All students take the VCLA while enrolled in the first section of EDUC 115. Passing scores on the VCLA are required before a student can register for the student teaching semester.
All students take test 5733 Core Academic Skills for Educators: Mathematics while enrolled in the first section of EDUC 115. A student can be exempt from this test with qualifying scores on the SAT to serve as a substitute test. For the SAT taken on or after March 1, 2016, you must have a total score of 1170 with at least 580 on the Reading and Writing Section and 560 on the Math Section. Passing scores on the Praxis I Math are required before a student can register for the student teaching semester.
Each student must take and pass a Praxis II test specific to their teaching subject area prior to the student teaching semester. Passing scores on the Praxis II content area test(s) are required before a student can register for the student teaching semester.
Prior to 09/01/2022, students seeking certification to teach in elementary grades and special education must take and pass the RVE (test number 5306). Students register and take the RVE while enrolled in EDUC 410/549E. A passing score on the RVE is required before a student seeking an elementary or special education endorsement can register for the student teaching semester.
After 09/01/2022, students seeking certification to teach in elementary grades and special education must take and pass the Praxis Teaching Reading: Elementary (test number 5205). This test will replace the RVE beginning on09/01/2022. Students register and take the Praxis Teaching Reading: Elementary while enrolled in EDUC 410/549E. A passing score on the Praxis Teaching Reading: Elementary is required before a student seeking an elementary or special education endorsement can register for the student teaching semester.
Those who passed the RVE (5036) prior to 09/01/2022 WILL NOT be required to take the Praxis Teaching Reading: Elementary (5205).
Registration and fees for testing are the responsibility of the student.
