Scholarships are available to support you every step of the way to help make your healthcare career dreams a reality.
Pre-Professional Scholarships
The Healthcare Pre-Professional Scholarship at Emory & Henry College is a renewable, four-year scholarship for incoming undergraduate students who are preparing themselves for admission to professional programs in healthcare disciplines.
These competitive scholarships will be awarded to students who show great promise to become professionals in a healthcare discipline by their intention to pursue an undergraduate course of study that will lead to admission to a professional healthcare program, exemplary high school GPAs, and excellent written communication skills.
Finalists for these scholarships will participate in interviews with faculty members and pre-health students held in the spring.
Any student who is interested in the Healthcare Pre-Professional Scholarship needs to apply for admission to Emory & Henry College and indicate your interest on your application.
Priority consideration is given to candidates who apply by February 15 annually. Interviews will occur following the review of applicants and will continue until all scholarships are offered and accepted.
The benefits of the Healthcare Pre-Professional Scholarships include:
- An annual, renewable scholarship, valued up to $500
- Preferential access to shadowing opportunities with healthcare professionals in their desired fields
- Financial assistance toward enrollment in entrance examination preparation programs (e.g., MCAT, GRE), workshops, seminars, etc.
Scholarship recipients will be expected to:
- Meet every semester with the college’s Pre-Health Director and/or appointed Pre-Health advisor to review their courses for upcoming semesters and professional pathway requirements
- Pursue an undergraduate curriculum designed to gain admission to a professional healthcare program
- Enroll and successfully complete the Introduction to Healthcare Professions class in their first or second semesters
- Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA each semester
- Attend at least 20 Healthcare Professions (Pre-Health) Club events per year (fall & spring semesters)
- Complete 25 hours of shadowing/observation annually
- Complete 15 hours of Volunteer service annually
Beyond Undergraduate Studies
The Gateway to Health Sciences Grant
Students who earn their undergraduate degree from E&H and have been accepted into a School of Health Sciences (SHS) Graduate Program (Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies) are eligible to receive the grant. The grant is equivalent to 10% savings on the student’s SHS graduate tuition each semester until the degree is completed, as long as the student remains in good academic standing in their program.
E&H Alumni are automatically eligible and do not need to apply for this grant separately. Receiving this grant does not prevent a student from participating in loan forgiveness programs or grants.
The Robert C. and Virgie Deel Singleton Memorial Scholarship and Award
The Singleton Memorial Scholarship and Award is for a student who plans to pursue Chiropractic Medicine. An award of up to $1000 can be offered to a student upon proof of their acceptance and documentation to matriculate at an accredited school of Chiropractic within the calendar year. The award is intended to help offset the costs associated with attending professional school (e.g. books, fees, tuition, etc).
Mary June Wall Scholarship for Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Mary June Wall was a professor at what is now known as James Madison University. Her brother, David Byer Wall, experienced mental illness and was the primary inspiration for her charitable donations. He lived in a group home near Emory & Henry College and died at the age of 71 on September 11, 2000.
This scholarship, designed to support the education and training of mental health counselors, is awarded in his honor. It is funded annually in the amount of $5,000.
The deadline to apply for the scholarship is July 1 each year.

TO BE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP, THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA MUST BE MET:
- The applicant must be an incoming accepted student in the Master’s program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
- The applicant must have demonstrated financial need.
- The applicant must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.2.
- The applicant must submit the name and contact information for 3 professional references that may be contacted by the scholarship committee.
- The applicant must submit a 2-3 page essay addressing the following points: the reasons that they want to become a clinical mental health counselor, what population(s) they are most interested in working with, what can be done to address the stigma that exists around seeking treatment for mental health concerns, and how this scholarship would make a difference in their access to education.
Student Loan Repayment Programs
Talent Attraction Program
The Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission offers a loan repayment program. The purpose of the Talent Attraction Program is to encourage recent graduates to live in the Tobacco Region and work in targeted, hard-to-fill occupations by providing up to $12,000 annually in student loan repayment with a two-year commitment. Loan repayment awards may be renewed for another two years if eligible (maximum award of $48,000). Priority is given to graduates of schools in the Region and permanent residents of the Tobacco Region.
Virginia State Loan Repayment Program
This VA-SLRP is operated by the Virginia Department of Health-Office of Health Equity (VDH-OHE) providing a non-taxed incentive to qualified medical, dental, behavioral health professionals, and pharmacists in return for a minimum of two years of service at an eligible practice site in one of the federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) in a qualified field of practice in Virginia. The maximum award for a four-year commitment is $140,000 and shall be for a qualifying educational loan. Learn more about Virginia’s Loan Repayment programs for healthcare providers.
